Dabney Peeples

Garden Design, Dabney Peeples

The Coleman Center for Arts and Culture is pleased to welcome resident artist and nationally renowned Garden Designer, Dabney Peeples. Peeples will design a garden for the Coleman Center grounds in memory of Zorba Lou, beloved k-9 companion of Coleman Center founding member Tut Riddick.

Peeples, originally from Starkville, MS remarks on the opportunity to work in the region of his childhood home. “Having grown up within spitting distance of the Black Belt Prairie, it’s my great honor to be asked to take part in the Coleman Center’s program this year. The long views over plowed fields, massive pecans and Oak Trees with cows grazing below, wonderfully worded hand-written signs selling corn are all part of my long-unused memory of home. I only hope I can do it justice.”

Peeples' design, which will transform the Coleman Center block on Avenue A, will use indigenous materials, found objects, and regional plantings to develop a narrative within the landscape. This design is part of a series of Coleman Center projects that use planning and design to enhance our community and generate the idea of revitalization among our citizens.

Peeples is a native of Starkville, MS where he received a Bachelors Degree in Landscape Architecture from Mississippi State University. He has designed over 5000 gardens that have been featured in many publications including Southern Living and Better Homes and Gardens. He is president and founder of J. Dabney Peeples Design Associates in Greenville, South Carolina where he lives and works.
