David Wyrick

David Wyrick completed a 4-week residency at the Coleman Center and municipalWORKSHOP residence facility in the summer of 2004. His Sheltered Bench Project was sited in the Sumter Apartments neighborhood, a HUD supported housing complex. The bench provides a sheltered sitting area for the neighborhood residents and serves as a bus stop for local children enrolled in the York, Alabama Head Start Program. Wyrick chose this site for the bench through a personal connection with the neighborhood, having grown up in a similar HUD complex in Wisconsin. The bench was completed with the help of Sumter Apartment Maintenance Technician Jessie Cunningham and community volunteer, Ervin Sturdivant, Jr. During his time in York, David also completed a small bench, titled County Seat, which he donated to the City of York. This bench was placed at the entrance to City Hall in York.
