The SACFAC Annual Art and Photography Show
The Coleman Center for Arts and Culture and the Sumter County Fine Arts Council will be hosting their annual Art and Photography Exhibit in the Altman Riddick Gallery from March 4, 2006 to April 5, 2006.
This annual show is a chance to showcase the artistic tallent of Sumter County, and for local artists to recieve feedback and recognition for their work from an accomplished jurror. This year's show features painting, basketry, quilts, glass work, furniture, ceramics, and photography. First place went to basketmaker Mary Jane Everett, second place to furniture maker James Cockrell, third place to glass artist Linda Campbell, and honorable mentions were given to artists Patricia DeMay, Linda Munoz, Joyce Chambless, Amanda Maycock, Sheila J. Hull, and Sue Dial.
Jurror Jeff Nilan says about the show, "It has been a pleasure to see the impressive range of medium and the sophistication of color and material relationships that speak to the strong arts and crafts tradition present in this region. This spectrum ranges from the soft pastels of the large quilt, Luxury in Cloth, the electrified colors and energetic marks in Majestic Mermaid, to the refined subtle lines and subdued palette of the Brown’s Jewelry basket. Campbell’s He Who Burn Churches Shall Burn In Hell makes good use of color and the transformative qualities of light, while Cockrell’s utilization of indigenous materials remind us of the importance of place in the work. I am thankful that I have had the opportunity to connect with the artists of Sumter County. It was difficult to limit the awards to a small number of pieces, and does not reflect the quality and breadth of the work presented here today."
About the Judge: Jeff Nilan received his MFA from Indiana University, where he has taught as Visiting Assistant Professor for the past six years. His photographs and artists’ books have been shown throughout the United States and he has received numerous grants and awards for his work, including Indiana Art Commission and Nexus Press in Atlanta.
