Sumter County Fine Arts Council Annual Art and Photography Exhibition, February 15 to March 12, 2005

For over fifteen years the Sumter County Fine Arts Council and the Coleman Center for Arts and Culture have sponsored the annual Art and Photography Exhibition. This exhibit allows local talent to display any work they have completed in the last year. The February 2005 exhibit displayed thirty-four pieces, submitted by seventeen artists. The exhibit was judged by Chicago-photographer Carl Pope. "The strength of this exhibition is represented by artworks of meticulous construction and inspiring originality. My choices for first, second, and third prizes contribute important innovations to the traditional forms of basketry, clothing design, and furniture making," says Pope.

First prize was awarded to Mary Jane Everett of Geiger, Ala for her basket titled, "Wonky." Second prize went to seamstress Lillie Mack of York for "LaLoops," and third prize was awarded to James E. Cockrell of Livingston, Ala. for "Poor Man's Throne." In addition there were seven honorable mentions awarded to Jerry Holcomb, Fred Walburn, Marineal Wilborne, Willie Allen Poe, Leah Nichols, Linda Munoz, and Mary Zeno. The Coleman Center for Arts and Culture and the Sumter County Fine Arts Council thanks all who participated.
