SCFAC Annual Juried Art Show
February 8 to April 3, Reception February 8, 6-8 PM
This annual juried show features works made by Sumter County artists. This year’s show will be juried by co-founders of the Birmingham arts organization Space One Eleven, Anne Arrasmith and Peter Prinz.
Tierney Malone, Southern Sounds
May 10 to June 28, Reception Saturday, May 10, 4-8 PM
Southern Sounds is an installation of drawings and wall signs created by Coleman Center resident artist, Tierney Malone. The exhibition is a celebration of Malone’s southern roots. It features drawings inspired by his time spent in York over the last year while creating the mural, SOUTHERN SOUNDS: Hear My Train A Coming. Malone’s work uses sign painting and pop culture to tell stories about the people and ideas that interest him.
Community Collaborations, Suzanne Hagood & Auburn University Students
July 11 to August 9, Reception Friday, July 11, 6 to 8 PM
Former Coleman Center resident artist, Suzanne Hagood, and twelve of her Auburn Universty students will be exhibiting community art projects created this year in Russell County, Alabama. The projects were completed as part of a university class on community-based art that Hagood created after her experience as a resident artist of the Coleman Center in 2007. The student projects were completed in collaboration with Russell County community residents and area organizations, and worked to express and strengthen community identity.
Osamu James Nakagawa, Banta
August 15 to September 29, Closing Reception, Saturday, September 20, 6 to 8 PM
Banta is a series of large scale images by renowned photographer Osamu James Nakagawa. Banta, currently on display at Sepia International Gallery in New York, is a series that depicts the Okinawan cliffs known for tragic battles of the second world war. In the artists words, the cliffs “become a metaphor for Okinawa’s history as well as a digitally-manipulated, hyper-real vision of my experience standing between fear and beauty on Okinawa’s banta.”
Richard Curtis, Sound Mapping
October 4 to November 29, Reception, Friday, October 31, 2008
Sound Mapping is a community-based project by Coleman Center resident artist Richard Curtis, meant to engage the residents of York and Livingston, and the surrounding area, in an exploration of the visual and sonic environment that defines their sense of home. The project will culminate in a project album and gallery exhibition in the fall of 2007.
Garland Farwell, Puppets and Process
December 1 to January 31, Reception, Friday, December 12, 6 to 8 PM
This show will feature works by long term Coleman Center resident artist, Garland Farwell. Farwell’s recent work consists of drawings, prototypes and puppets from several theater works currently in production, as well as objects, masks, and puppets created in collaboration with schools and community groups in Alabama.
