Artist Samita Sinha will be visiting throughout 2011 to collaborate with area residents in a community wide ensemble. The group will create new compositions that braid different versions of the same songs that are common to the repertoires of the area’s black and white churches, but that are arranged and performed differently. The work will provide a new ground for exchange, while creating a powerful shared experience with social, political, and spiritual implications.
In Sinha’s recent July visit she worked with students in the Coleman Center for the Arts (CCA) Summer Camp, offered workshops at area churches, invited residents to share songs close to their hearts, and listened to the musical identity of Sumter County. Her next visit will take place from August 11 to August 15, and on Friday August 12 Sinha and area performers will offer individual performances at the CCA gallery.
