Richard Curtis, Mockingbird: Mapping Sights and Sounds

November 7, 2008

The Coleman Center is pleased to welcome new resident artist, Richard Curtis, from Florence, Alabama. Curtis is currently completing a two-month residency in which he will work on the project “Mapping Sights and Sounds,” that will premiere in the fall of 2008.

Curtis’s community based sound project will engage the residents of York and Sumter County in an exploration of the sights and sounds that they associate with their sense of home. Curtis will then seek out these sounds and record them. The recordings will be used in sound compositions to be featured on a project album and gallery installation.

Curtis will also take on the persona of a mocking bird, as he aims repeat the sounds he finds through his work with community members. The metaphor of the mockingbird is developed in other aspects of the project as the artist makes “nests” with found objects from around York.

Curtis received an MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago, and is currently teaching art at the University of North Alabama in Florence. This project is made possible by funds from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the Alabama Power Foundation, the Daniel Foundation of the Alabama, the Coleman Center for the Arts, and the generous contributions of our individual supporters.
