The Coleman Center for the Arts invites students to join us in Art Club’s “Art in Action” this spring every Monday beginning on January 7 from 4 to 6 pm. Students will learn about the history and process of making public art and will create art outside the gallery and in the public space that is their community.
Participating students will work with local artists and teachers in utilizing creative solutions to engage and transform our community, respond to current local and global events, using news stories and trends as inspiration for the subjects of their projects. The semester will culminate in each students’ creation of a work of public art that positively transforms the town of York.
Art Club is an opportunity for Sumter County youth ages 13-18 to build skills in visual thinking and gain pre-college experience in a safe and alternative space. Students will meet at the Coleman Center on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 pm. Each session will include a snack for students. In April of 2013 the Coleman Center will hold a public show of the work completed in Art Club.
Anyone interested in art, community, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving is encouraged to join us this spring. The Coleman Center can accept up to 12 students to participate in Art Club.
