Art Club Begins!

Pop Smart: A Street-Level Art Intervention

The Coleman Center for the Arts is pleased to announce that Art Club will begin meeting again on Monday January 13th. Art Club is an opportunity for Sumter County youth ages 12-18 to build skills in visual thinking and gain pre-college experience in a safe and alternative space. Students will meet at the Coleman Center on Monday afternoons from 4 to 6 pm. Students coming from Sumter Central can ride the bus to the Coleman Center with a parental note.

This spring students will spend the semester exploring public art by creating work in the storefront windows of the Coleman Center’s new downtown space, Pop Start. Students will look at and discuss murals, installation art, and storefront and street-level art projects around the world while planning their own art interventions. Using painting, sculpture, design, creative writing, and community event planning, students will work to activate the window front space while considering how art can contribute to, inspire, or support their own communities. Students will get a snack at every session. At the end of the semester, the Coleman Center will host a public presentation of the work completed in Art Club.

To join simply come to our first meeting in the Art Club room in the back of the York Library on Monday January 13th from 4 to 6 pm.

Anyone interested in art, design, community, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving is encouraged to join us this spring.  For more information please contact the Coleman Center for the Arts at 205.392.2005 or colemancenter@gmail.com.
