“Be a Part of Camp” investigated the idea of holons: something that is simultaneously a part and a whole. Campers considered hierarchy, structure and systems like biology, society and culture. Participants gained experience in drawing, painting, photography, music, performance, creative writing and critical thinking.
Working with Nathan Purath and Shana Berger, students made David Hockney inspired self portrait photo collages. Jocelyn Edens worked with older students to make a Sumter County wiki page, and with younger students to make word searches based on campers’ identities. Vassie Welbeck-Browne introduced students to rhythm and drama through drum circles and short acting scenes. Darius Hill introduced students to themes present in his own work, and guided them in making individual sculptures from distressed popsicle sticks. Kanita Sturdivant led students in renditions of “Seasons of Love,” “Love Train,” and “Hevenu Shalom Aleichem” in honor of founding camp instructor John Brown.
