The Coleman Center for Arts and Culture is pleased to announce the opening of a show featuring new works by renowned painter, dele jegede. The show will be on display in the Coleman Center main gallery from November 1st to December 6th, and the reception will take place on First Saturday November 4th from 6-8 PM.
The opening reception for the show will feature the Coleman Center’s second annual Chili Supper. This annual event is a celebration of and for the Coleman Center’s supporters, and all community members are welcome to come and enjoy food, music, and fine arts. Musical entertainment will be provided by UWA’s Angelic Voices of Faith.
jegede, who will visit the Coleman Center for the exhibition reception, has shown his work extensively throughout the United States. Originally from Nigeria, he is currently the Chair of the Art Department at Miami of Ohio University.
His paintings combine elements of his African heritage with American consumer culture. His statement remarks, “At every opportunity, I attempt to draw attention, in ways subtle but yet unmistakable, to the connection between our consumerist addiction and primordial instincts: we are one world, united by Visa and McDonalds.
The Angelic Voices of Faith Gospel Choir from UWA, under the direction of Margie Walker, will provide musical entertainment. The group’s statement explains, “this organization is known for its creative ministry through music. We travel throughout the southeast representing the University of West Alabama and also representing our diverse communities as a form of outreach.”
The annual Chilli Supper, back by popular demand, will be organized by Jean Harwell. Food will be served on a first come first serve basis. Please join us on November 4th for an enjoyable evening of art, music, food, and fun!
The exhibition is made possible by funding from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Coleman Center for Arts and Culture.
First Saturday is the Coleman Center’s monthly celebration of the arts. Artist studios in downtown York will be open throughout the day.
