Michael Ross: Drawing Workshop

On August 17, 2019, Laurel-based artist Michael Ross lead a one-day drawing demonstration and workshop. Participants learned drawing techniques, ways of looking, composition, and process.

The Drawing Workshop is part of the Coleman Center’s Community Arts Workshops series focusing on creative learning experiences designed for multiple generations. These all-ages workshops encourage friends and family to register together and work collaboratively.

In the fall of 2020, Ross’ drawings, paintings, collage work, and textile sculptures will be part of a solo exhibition in the Coleman Center for the Arts’ Altman Riddick Gallery. The exhibition will serve as a summary of the artist’s work from the early 1990s to the present; this work was influenced by his roots in Mississippi and time living in San Francisco.

Ross’ drawings, painting, and sculptures frequently picture abstracted, anthropomorphic houses, vibrant colors, and are varying sizes. The artist has worked with this particular iconography over three decades as a way to investigate a shared and individual site of emotional refuge, memory, and the black male figure. Michael Ross exhibition will include an opening event, artist lecture, and a workshop.

This workshop was offered in partnership with the Educational Foundation of America and ArtPlace America.
