Pop Smart

An Art Club Community Workshop and Street-Level Art Intervention

The Coleman Center for the Arts is pleased to announce the opening of “Pop Smart,” a community workshop and art installation by the students of Art Club. The event will take place on Tuesday, May 6 at 5:30 PM at Pop Start, the Coleman Center’s downtown space across from Super Dollar. Refreshments will be served and the event is free and open to the public!

Over the last semester Art Club students have explored public art by looking at projects from around the world and creating work in the storefront windows of Pop Start. Their first project resulted in a bold window mural inspired by both the favela painting projects of Brazil and the words of Maya Angelou.

As part of their final window front project, Art Club designed a narrative-based art installation and then invited the community to participate and contribute to the project. Students lead the charge as they taught community members to create their own components to be added to the piece resulting in a growing, dynamic and inclusive artwork inspired by York and it’s citizens!

Art Club is made possible by funding from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, UWA, Americorps VISTA, and the generous contributions of supporters of the Coleman Center for the Arts.
