Pop Start Art Apprenticeships

The Coleman Center’s new Pop Start Arts Apprenticeship program launched Monday, October 29 thanks to a grant from National Endowment for the Arts. This particular grant is in the NEA’s largest funding category and supports projects that focus on the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and/or the strengthening of communities through the arts.

Pop Start Art Apprentices will learn by assisting local artists in their creative small businesses. Mentors include Selma-born writer Salaam Green, Livingston-based painter Shelia Hull, York-based textile artist Lillie Mack,  and Emelle-based quilter Willie Poe. Public workshops will also be offered by regional entrepreneurs.

The goal of the Pop Start Art Apprenticeship is to provide students with real world experience in creative fields, hands-on arts education, creative problem solving, and entrepreneurship. Pop Start Art Apprenticeships also aims to provide paid opportunities for local artists and craftspeople.

The Coleman Center continues to accept applications for the Pop Start Art Apprentices.
