Juror Statement

“I was very impressed overall with the group of submissions and especially the diverse range of mediums—I really enjoyed the variety of materials and techniques artists in Sumter County are working with.  It was wonderful to see the range from more traditional mediums local to the region such as ceramics and quilt making to the other end of the spectrum with a submission that was a conceptual performance piece.

It was very difficult to decide—I tried to consider submissions that were equally strong in technique, where it seemed to me the artist was mastering their skill, as well as demonstrating the ability to create a work that presents new ideas and encourages audiences to think about something in a new way.

It was such a treat to have the opportunity to visit the Coleman Center for the Arts and to be the guest juror for this year’s Annual Juried Art Show and to get a sense of what artists in Sumter County, Alabama are thinking about and the work they are making.  It was a very inspiring day!”
