JUROR STATEMENT
Making is in many ways an act of devotion. To create, either out of necessity or interest, is to commit time, effort, and care to material form. Whether it’s hours spent weaving a tapestry, carving into clay, or rendering a landscape; we expend our energy and develop skills in the areas that are closest to our heart.
The joy of an exhibition like this is in the portrait it paints of the community that made it. Through this selection of work you can see pride, humor, and grief. Priorities surface in the way a glob of paint is handled, on the foot of a cup, or in the lining of a coat. The various subjects, materials, and disciplines here suggest a diverse and vibrant community of makers, each with an unique voice.
It’s been a pleasure getting to juror the 2018 Sumter County Fine Arts Council Show, although it’s been daunting. The diversity of perspectives and materials is both the strength of this community and the thing that make selecting work hard. I am grateful for this snapshot into the lives and devotions of Sumter County artists.
