Small Town Design Initiative

Fall 2005

In the fall of 2005 the Coleman Center collaborated with the City of York and Auburn University’s Center for Architecture and Urban Studies to undergo the Small Town Design Initiative strategic planning process. Students of the Center led by Professor Cheryl Morgan, visited York continuously over a period of several months, talking with community members, taking photographs, making sketches, and holding town meetings to assess the community’s biggest dreams, greatest assets, and hopes for the future.

The final plan, which was released at the last town meeting in November of 2005, revealed a phased timeline that includes strategies for the revitalization of the City of York. The plan recognized the Coleman Center as a nucleus for the psychological and economic revitalization of the community. Other strategies identified included making York a walk-able City, developing eco-tourism, and defining the community as a destination for tourists by offering artistic, cultural, entertainment, and outside activities.
