The Coleman Center for the Arts is hosting the annual Sumter County Fine Arts Council Juried Art Show this spring. The show opened with a public reception on Friday, March 18th from 6 to 8 pm, and will be on display from March 18th to April 27th. This juried show features the artwork of Sumter County artists, and $600 in cash prizes were awarded. Works accepted include painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, textiles, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, and stained glass.

1st Place was awarded to Mary Jane Everett for 5 Grain Bins; 2nd Place to Liz Robertson forSmoke House; and 3rd Place went to Lynda Harwell for Holly Ground. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Louise Boyd for A Nod to Spring; Alan Hall for The Houston; Lillie Mack for Lift Up Your Eyes, Monica Newman Moore for Prairie View; Mary Secrest for The Old Home Place; and Jessica L. Smith for blue Micro Teapot.

Guest juror Diane Barber remarked on the clear sense of place and connection to the environment among Sumter County artists. “Each artist is distinctly present in the work they are doing. Many of the artists appear to draw from consistent inspiration, but it is interpreted by each artist in individual ways,” she said. Ms. Barber was impressed by the variety and breadth of the work, and considered it an honor to judge the works of Sumter County artists.

Diane Barber has been Visual Arts Curator of DiverseWorks ArtSpace (Houston, TX) since 1997 and Co-Executive Director since 2006. During her tenure, she has curated more than 60 exhibitions and independent curatorial projects giving particular emphasis to commissioning new works and site-specific installations. Barber is also a founding member of the Independent Arts Collaborative, a Houston-based organization working to develop a multi-tenant arts complex in Houston’s urban core.
