Have you seen our new space? Since 2014 we developed one of our two downtown storefronts. Co-Directors Emeritus Shana Berger and Nathan Purath imagined them as venues for collaboration between local makers, contemporary artists, area citizens, professionals, and students.
In the winter of 2016, Pop Start’s HVAC system failed precipitating the space’s already planned renovation. Through support from the Delta Regional Authority, ArtPlace America, and ongoing programmatic support from the Educational Foundation of America, one of the Pop Start storefronts underwent significant restoration. The talented folks at Old School Collaborative, LLC in Birmingham and and Sumter County’s RAC Construction provided the creative and building talent respectively.
In July 2018 regional sign painter and Coleman Center teaching artist Creighton Tynes began work on Pop Start’s exterior window. Tynes invited student from the Coleman Center annual summer camp to join him with hand lettering and aluminum leaf application.
Beginning in November 2018 Pop Start has been the site for budding creative makers from across the county. The Pop Start Art Apprenticeship program is a pilot education program that pairs high school students with local and regional artists mentors. Students get real world experience in creative practice including quilting, textile art, storytelling, and painting.
Stay tuned for upcoming programming in Pop Start including film screenings, workshops, and co-working hours.
