On July 3, 2021, the City of York celebrated York Day from sun up to sun down and well after. Artist Zarouhie Abdalian, collaborating artist Joseph Rosenweig, Coleman Center staff, family and friends used the occasion to recognize student artists from our two Making Art in Public workshops. We help a soft, COVID-safe opening for our storefront exhibition, Making Art in Public II: Monuments and Memorials.
Student artists shared information about their proposals and their workshop experiences in Summer 2019 and Summer 2020. Both workshops centered peer-lead learning; students researched, made presentations, and gave constructive criticism over four days of in-person meetings (2019) and multiple weeks of virtual meetings (2020). The latter culminated in six proposals for monuments and/or memorials in Sumter County, AL.
You can visit the Making Art in Public II: Monuments and Memorial exhibition now at Pop Start storefront space, 211A Broad Street, York.
The program is supported by the Alabama State Council for the Arts and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
